Reading the Bible makes you a good Christian in the same way that reading a book on music theory makes you a good musician, which is to say, not at all.

Yes, that knowledge is essential. You should study that knowledge. Take it in. Cherish it. But your ability does not rely on that knowledge; rather what you do with it. You can know everything there is to know about chord structure, phrasing, dynamics, and the like, but until you sit down to play or compose music that knowledge does you absolutely no good.

Proficiency does not come about by knowledge alone. It takes endless practice. It takes stretching yourself to your limits. It takes knowing when some rules apply and when some don’t.

Being a proficient Christian requires much more than a knowledge of the bible.
